Mandatory sustainability reporting: How do you extract data for the CSRD from IBM Maximo?
With the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), more and more organizations will be required to report on the impact of their activities on people and the environment from 2024. Are you ready for this new reporting guideline from the European Union? And how do you easily extract the data you need for your report from IBM Maximo?
Specifically, companies that are already covered by the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) must comply with the CSRD from January 1, 2024. The CSRD is in fact an extension of the NFRD. From 2025, the obligation applies to large companies that are not yet covered by the NFRD. There are three criteria: more than 250 employees, more than 40 million euros in turnover per year and more than 20 million euros on the balance sheet. If an organization meets two of the three conditions, this is enough to be considered ‘large’. This means that the CSRD will soon apply to more than 49,000 companies (for comparison: around 11,700 organizations are currently covered by the NFRD).
The CSRD applies to listed SME companies from January 1, 2026. However, non-listed SME companies will also eventually be affected; the EU is considering a lighter CSRD variant for them that is easier to apply.
Basis for CSDR reporting
To comply with the CSRD, organizations must report on all kinds of matters. This not only looks at factors such as CO2 emissions, energy consumption or the impact on biodiversity, but also at the social impact of the activities. How does a company deal with people, within its own organization and in the chain? This means collecting and reporting a lot of data from different systems. IBM Maximo is a valuable source of information for an important part of the mandatory reports. After all, the asset management software records all kinds of data about assets such as installations, vehicles and infrastructure objects, both from IoT systems and monitoring systems as well as control systems. For example, how many cubic meters of emissions does an asset produce in a certain period? What about fuel consumption? And what about aspects such as air and water quality or the safety of employees? The great thing is that IBM Maximo can pass on all this type of data to IBM Envizi as standard, a solution specifically for reporting data in the field of environment, people and governance. With IBM Maximo Application Suite (IBM MAS) this is done via an API: the IBM MAS Connector. But even if you have IBM Maximo 7.6.1 you can report with IBM Envizi. This works via the IBM Maximo Integration Framework. IBM Envizi can handle more than 500 different types of data and offers all kinds of useful standard reports for the CSRD.
Start preparing for CSRD now
Perhaps your organization is not directly covered by the CSRD, but one thing is certain: there will come a time when you have to believe it. Moreover, it is better to start preparing now, so that you will not be overtaken by developments later. For example, if you are required to report by 2025, you must already collect data for 2024. At Gemba we can help you with this. We will sit down together to see what data you need and how we can bring it together with the help of IBM Maximo and IBM Envizi or another suitable reporting tool and make it available in the right way. We can also make the link to your building management system, such as IBM Tririga. After all, there is also much to be made more sustainable there and increasingly higher demands are being made. For example, there is a new EU directive for the energy performance of buildings, which is expected to enter into force by 2025.
