I love translating technology
into functionality”
John de Haas recently joined Gemba as a senior functional consultant, after no less than twenty years as an independent IT specialist. What does he have to offer Gemba clients? And what drives him?
What kind of work did you do as a freelancer?
“I was mainly on the technical side of IT, but I love translating technology into functionality. That’s where my added value lies. I have also always enjoyed contact with clients. My first job ever was as a coordinator at a helpdesk. The funny thing is that I worked with IBM Tivoli as a user back then, which was pretty much the predecessor of IBM Control Desk and IBM Maximo. When I applied, I thought I didn’t know the products Gemba works with at all. But I did, only under a different name.”
Why a permanent job at Gemba now?
“As a freelancer, I was seconded to companies and worked directly for my own clients. I was tired of that fleeting existence. I wanted something new, to build something, and I missed colleagues. So I put my resume on the market. It was a hit right away. I received a call from a recruiter who wanted to have a cup of coffee with me at Gemba. There was an immediate connection, and the next day I already had a proposal in my email. As a consultant at Gemba, I deal with technology, functionality, and clients, which is a great middle ground for me!”
What are you working on?
“Since I started at Gemba last April, I have helped with various projects. Now I spend three out of the four days I work at Schiphol, in a team of Gemba consultants and Schiphol employees. In the meantime, I am getting to know the possibilities of IBM Maximo and IBM Control Desk well. You can do so many things with it!”
What do you do when you are not working?
“I’m crazy about music, just like Jack, the director of Gemba. I have my own home studio where I make music, and I regularly play with a cover band at parties and events in the north of North Holland. Funk, disco, soul: three hours of dancing. I also enjoy motorcycling. The first thing I saw when I came to talk to Gemba was the motorcycle in the hall. Recently, we went on a motorcycle tour with colleagues and clients, which was great fun. My grandchildren are another hobby of mine. I happen to be going to the fair with them this afternoon.”
How do you like Gemba so far?
“I’m really enjoying myself and feel at home. After so many years as a lone wolf, I thought it would be difficult to get used to, but it’s not at all. At Gemba, they give you freedom in your work, which suits me. And if I don’t know something, I can turn to my colleagues. Everyone is willing to help. There are very few companies that do what Gemba does; they are really in a niche market. It is a healthy company with a future. That is also important, of course.”
