Interview with Johan Knook
“I am good at recognizing the problems of customers”

Sales manager Johan Knook once stumbled into technology by chance. That eventually brought him to Gemba: a fascinating company, in a world that is constantly changing. The connection was there from the first moment. “I get a tremendous amount of energy from my work.”

Who is Johan Knook?

“A true Rotterdammer, raised in the South, as they say here. I have a great passion for football, martial arts and reading. I have a season ticket for Feijenoord and my own Thai boxing school, where I teach two evenings a week.”

Since when have you been working at Gemba?

“For more than five years now, since November 1, 2017. I started as sales manager IoT. The IoT world was still a pioneering market at the time. I worked at an IoT company and came into contact with Stefan Hoffmans, a consultant from Gemba. He was looking for sensors for an IoT solution for cathodic protection. We immediately clicked. Gemba wanted to set up an IoT department at that time. After one conversation with Jack Lok, the director of Gemba, the deal was sealed and Stefan and I started marketing Gemba’s IoT activities. An ideal duo: he is my technical right brain and the storyteller, I am the seller.”

What are you doing now?

“Since last year, as sales manager, I have been responsible for the sales and marketing of all solutions that we offer from Gemba Service. So I also picked up the asset management piece. A lot is happening in this area. For example, IBM Maximo has of course become IBM Maximo Application Suite. A major change and this also applies to setting up solutions with IBM MAS. We are also busy tapping into new markets. For example, we will soon be offering smaller companies with many assets a suitable IBM MAS solution.”

How is Gemba as an employer?

“Gemba treats its people very well. I am thinking, among other things, of all the activities we do. For example, the trip to Seville for our 25th anniversary was very special. And I also really enjoyed the BBQ in Blijdorp with all the partners and children. Even in the COVID era, things were organized, such as an online Thai cooking workshop with everyone. Gemba also contributes to society. We support all kinds of charities; in December I delivered 5,000 euros for ALS in the Glazen Huis. Every employee has five days of leave per year for volunteer work and we participate in NLdoet every year. Then most of our people are not at work, but busy with chores for others.”

What do you enjoy most about your work?

“The energy I get from it. The world of asset management is incredibly dynamic. Different industries, different products, different people I talk to. They all have their own issues. Before I came to Gemba, I worked at various ICT companies, but I have no technical background. What I am good at is recognizing the customer’s problems and passing them on to the right people at Gemba. Together with the Operations department, we then set up the solution that the customer needs.”

How do you see the future?

“With the transition from traditional asset management to digital asset management, more and more opportunities are emerging. I am thinking, for example, of visual inspection, where you remotely monitor assets with digital cameras and AI, or of all kinds of innovative applications for mobile asset management. Our challenge is to help customers make good use of it. That is why I also want to sit down with them more often to talk about the future. In the field of sales and marketing, I am taking steps towards the future together with my colleagues Emile van Rijn and Manon van Rookhuijzen. It’s all very interesting, I’m looking forward to it!
